Local photographer wins National Geographic competition
Perly Freeman, 31, beat thousands of hopeful photographers when she scooped first prize in a photography competition judged by a National Geographic expert.
The competition, sponsored by Bowmore Distilleries in Islay, runs annually and has three categories: People, places and nature. Perly entered the nature category and was awarded first prize as well as over all winner 2011 for her striking image of a ladybug perched on a mushroom. Her and her partner are now looking forward to the grand prize: an all expenses paid trip to the island of Islay.
The winning image, A Place To Rest, was announced yesterday. Judge, John Burcham, said: “ I love the way the ladybug is delicately perched on the edge of the mushroom. The shallow depth of feel really makes this image really standout. It's very fantasy like."
The budding photographer relocated to the area last summer to be nearer her family and now lives near LLandysul. She was a finalist in the same competition in 2010 with another one her surreal macro images. She said: “ I am thrilled to have won the competition and look forward to the trip, which we plan to take in the spring.”
Perly enjoys photographing: Nature, people and places and is particularly inspired by the welsh landscape. A selection of her work can be seen on her website: www.perlyj.com. She is holding an exhibition of her work at the Town Hall Café in Lampeter. The exhibition will be up for the entire month of April.
